First heavy snowfall of the season; I make my way to my barn to tend to my morning chores with the horses. I always walk to connect with the day and appreciate the world around me. It’s an absolutely beautiful day, it’s not too cold, there is no wind, a few flakes of snow are still hovering in the air. The world is very still and very quiet, all is blanketed by the sparkly snowflakes. I’m greeted by my hungry companions. Every morning is an important ritual. They eat enjoying a special treat with their grain – apples from a neighbour’s orchard or carrots from the farmer’s field. Then the brushing begins – they enjoy every stroke of the brush and I enjoy the one on one closeness with each one of them. When all is done and all is said between us I let them outside. The big barn door opens and they see the snow for the first time this season. Big eyes, ears forward, nostrils inhaling the new day outside, bodies tensed and ready to spring. Finally they can no longer wait – they take off to experience it all. Galloping, turning, bucking – pure joy and pure love of life.
The air of heaven is that which blows between a horse’s ears.[Arabian Proverb]
